There are many distributions of Linux, which are divided in nature, roughly divided into

  • The commercial version maintained by the commercial company (the commercial version is represented by Redhat)
  • A free distribution version maintained by the open source community (the open source community version is represented by debian)

These versions have different characteristics and play different roles in different application fields, so they cannot be generalized. And most VPS only provide release versions maintained by the open source community

Ubuntu

Ubuntu has more and more fans in recent years. Ubuntu has a beautiful user interface, a complete package management system, strong software source support, and a rich technical community. Ubuntu also has good compatibility with most hardware, including the latest Graphics card and so on. All this makes Ubuntu more and more popular. But don't forget: all you need is a simple, stable and easy-to-use server system!

Ubuntu's graphical interface is beautiful, but it also determines that its best application area is a desktop operating system rather than a server operating system. If you want an immersive environment in the process of learning Linux, then Ubuntu is really good: it is only installed on your own computer and not on the server. From this point of view, Ubuntu is not among the choice of operating systems installed in VPS. I believe you will not pay for the hundreds of M drivers and precious memory.

CentOS

You will find that many of the servers deployed by commercial companies in the production environment use the CentOS system. CentOS is a community re-release version compiled from the RHEL source code. CentOS is simple and user-friendly under the command line. It is stable and has strong English documentation and the support of the development community. It has the same origins as Redhat. Although it does not provide commercial support alone, you can often find a clue from Redhat. Relative to Debian, CentOS is slightly larger. Is a very mature Linux distribution

Many webmasters generally choose the centOS system, and CentOS is a re-released version compiled from the redhat source code. CentOS removes many applications that have nothing to do with server functions. The system is simple but very stable. The command line operation can facilitate the management of the system and applications, and it has help documents and community support.

Debian

Generally speaking, as an operating system suitable for servers, Debian is much more stable than Ubuntu. It can be said that the stability is unparalleled. The entire debian system, as long as there are no logical defects at the application level, it is basically a golden system, and it is a system that does not need to be restarted all year round (of course, this is an exaggeration, but it does not exaggerate its stability). The basic core of the entire debian system is very small, which is not only stable, but also occupies a small amount of hard disk space and memory. A 128M VPS can run Debian smoothly, while CentOS will be a bit harder. However, due to the development route of Debian, its help documentation is slightly less than that of CentOS, and the technical information is also less.

Due to its excellent performance and stability, Debian is very popular with VPS users
